Title: Simply Obey
Memorize: Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. Romans 13:5 (Nkjv)
Bible Reading: Romans 13:1-5 (Nkjv)
[1] Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
[2] Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
[3] For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.
[4] For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.
[5] Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake.
Message:
Being a Christian does not put you above the law. There are many benefits of obeying the law, and God commands us in today’s Bible reading to be subject to the authority of the land. People who obey the laws of the land will not partake in the consequences that come with breaking the law. The consequences of breaking the law include payment of fines, jail terms, and finally, God’s wrath.
In Mark 12:13-17, when Jesus was asked whether it was lawful to pay tax, He said, “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.” In other words, Jesus was telling them to obey the laws of the land.
As a child of God, you are not expected to follow worldly standards. The fact that people disobey laws and orders does not mean you should do the same. Some people litter their surroundings with dirt and later blame the government for overflowing drainages. Some people claim to be Christians, yet they disobey traffic rules. Beloved, if you’re not obeying the rules laid down by your parents, school authority, or the government of your country within the confines of God’s word, you are definitely disobedient to God because God put these people in the position of authority.
Key Point:
Honour God with your simple acts of obedience.
Hymn 30 – When We Walk With The Lord
When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain]
Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we’ll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey. [Refrain]
